Bernhard Schlink - "El lector" (Anagrama)

Coincidiendo con el estreno en cines de la adaptación protagonizada por Kate Winslet, de casualidad encontré entre mis libros éste, que hacía años me había regalado un buen amigo. Y menuda sorpresa más grata me llevé. En apenas doscientas páginas Schlink relata una historia potente y logra una de esas novelas pequeñas pero matonas, llena de matices y con una profundización en los personajes que causa impresión. Más que leerla, la engullí y cuando la acabé me quedé destrozada. Y cometí el error de ir a ver enseguida la película, algo que nunca más volveré a hacer porque mi visión estaba totalmente condicionada por la impresión que me había causado el original y quizá fui injusta con una adaptación que es digna, aunque para mí se queda en algo bastante pobre si se compara; es difícil trasladar a la pantalla las hondas reflexiones del protagonista sin hacer uso de la voz en off. Aún así ver a Kate dar uno de sus recitales interpretativos siempre es una gozada.
De El lector se pueden decir muchas cosas. Su punto de arranque es una intensa relación amorosa entre un adolescente y una mujer mayor, que marcará de por vida al primero y que se desarrolla en alguna ciudad indeterminada de la Alemania de posguerra. Los sucesos se van recordando desde el presente, el narrador hace un ejercicio de memoria a modo de tanteo, yendo y viniendo, reconstruyendo y sobre todo reflexionando con una profundidad sin concesiones; con un solo párrafo consigue abarcar tanto: “(…) en lo que sucedió en aquellos días reconozco hoy el mismo esquema por medio del cual el pensamiento y la acción se han conjugado o han divergido durante toda mi vida. Pienso, llego a una conclusión, la conclusión cristaliza en una decisión, y entonces me doy cuenta de que la acción es algo aparte, algo que puede seguir a la decisión, pero no necesariamente. A lo largo de mi vida, he hecho muchas veces cosas que era incapaz de decidirme a hacer y he dejado de hacer otras que había decidido firmemente.”

Uno de los temas esenciales de la novela es la culpa en todas sus formas, la culpa que angustia a alguien a título personal, sus disquisiciones morales entre lo que debe o no hacer, pero también la culpa de toda una generación de alemanes, la posterior a la Segunda Guerra Mundial, avergonzada y rabiosa por lo que habían hecho (o no) sus padres. La indagación que realiza Schlink (con juicio de fondo incluido) no es nada facilona, es precisamente su punto de vista fresco sobre el asunto lo que le da envergadura: “Hoy en día hay tantos libros y películas sobre el tema, que el mundo de los campos de exterminio forma ya parte del imaginario colectivo que complementa el mundo real. Nuestra fantasía está acostumbrada a internarse en él, y desde la serie de televisión ‘Holocausto’ y películas como ‘La decisión de Sophie’ y especialmente ‘La lista de Schindler’, no sólo se mueve en su interior, no se limita a percibir, sino que ha empezado a añadir y decorar por su cuenta.”
Algo que me ha gustado especialmente de El lector es la relación erótica que sirve de punto de partida al relato. Cómo describe el nacimiento de la pasión entre la pareja, los primeros encuentros, el aprendizaje sexual del joven, y la descripción de esa mujer y de su cuerpo, objeto de deseo nada convencional y que el autor nos muestra con delicada autenticidad. …Hanna, menuda mujer, tan dura e inflexible, fuerte y frágil a la vez, consigue revolverte, te incomoda la fascinación y la comprensión, o compasión, que eres capaz de sentir hacia ella. Y entiendes la altura de ese amor que deja al protagonista marcado de por vida, bloqueado emocionalmente, siempre esquivo: “¿Será eso lo que me entristece? ¿El celo y la fe que me colmaban en aquella época, mi empeño en arrancarle a la vida una promesa que de ningún modo podía cumplir? A veces veo en las caras de los niños y los adolescentes el mismo celo y la misma fe, y los veo con la misma tristeza con que recuerdo los míos. Esa tristeza, ¿no será la tristeza pura? ¿Es eso lo que nos sobreviene cuando, al mirar atrás, los recuerdos hermosos se nos vuelven quebradizos, al ver que aquella felicidad no se alimentaba sólo de la situación del momento, sino de una promesa que no se cumplió?”
“(…) me daba pena su vida retrasada y fracasada, y pensé con tristeza en los retrasos y fracasos de la vida en general. Pensé que cuando se ha dejado pasar el momento justo, cuando alguien se ha negado demasiado tiempo a algo, o se lo han negado, ese algo por fuerza llega demasiado tarde, por más que uno lo acometa con todas sus fuerzas y lo reciba con gozo. ¿O quizá no existe ‘demasiado tarde’, solo ‘tarde’, y ‘tarde’ es mejor que ‘nunca’? No lo sé.” Me gusta especialmente ese “no lo sé” final, porque encierra toda la complejidad del ser humano, su constante contradicción, su incertidumbre, su naturaleza esencialmente indefensa. La novela no aporta respuestas a las cuestiones que plantea, y se agradece, porque su valor para mí reside en las certeras preguntas que nos hace, en el espacio que nos reserva a nosotros, los lectores.

No eres la primera persona que conozco que se lee esta novela y luego la película le resulta decepcionante... No es de extrañar, con semejante novelaza cualquier comparación es imposible.
Acabo de leer el libro, porque soy perezoso para ir al cine, y me resultaba muy atractiva la historia. Y lo siento, pero no me ha gustado mucho. Lo comentaré pronto en mi blog, pero el libro me ha dejado frío, así que a la vista de los comentarios, desde luego que no creo que vaya a ver la película.
